'LETS FIGHT COVID-19 TOGETHER' - SAYS TAXI MAN



"We need to work together and put aside our differences to win the war against Covid-19." This sobering message was delivered by the chairperson of the Greater Ventersdorp Taxi Association, Mr Smanga Biyana. He pleaded with public transport operators in the area to align themselves with lockdown regulations as the country enters Level 4 of the restrictions.

He was speaking on behalf of the industry as a grateful recipient of the consignment of PPEs from the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management.

“We need to work together as operators despite our differences, work with government, obey lockdown regulations to contribute to saving lives,” said Biyana.

Leading the distribution of Personal Protective Equipments at the Ventersdorp taxi rank was Chief Director Civilian, Nikiwe Num who appealed to operators to continue cooperating with law enforcement officers.

In nearby Koster, MEC Sello Lehari implored on operators to strictly abide by physical distancing regulations including wearing of masks.

“Lockdown Level 5 ended and Level 4 starts. We appeal to you to abide by all these regulations and restrictions."

The MEC said it is important for the transport operators to properly use disinfectants, sanitizers, masks and gloves given to them by the Department.

“You are at the frontline of services to the communities, therefore it is important that you disinfect your taxis before and after every load. Also do keep records of passengers you are transporting as this may be helpful in tracking should the need arise," said Lehari.

MEC said the COVID-19 it is not gender or race selective but affects everyone in the villages, townships and suburbs. It is therefore important that everyone irrespective of background to obey the set lockdown regulations.

In total, the Department has already distributed more than 428 boxes of gloves comprising of 100 each, 8140 masks and concentrated disinfectant chemicals comprising 20 litres which will be over 300 000 litres when diluted.
